Casual Flat - Artisanal Heritage
This moccasin for JCPenney’s Arizona line was part of the Artisanal Heritage trend, during a season when the brand invested in genuine leather for a capsule collection. My goal was to create an elevated take on the traditional moccasin flat while staying true to the comfort and familiarity the Arizona customer likes. I added a feather bundle beneath the suede kilty for an elevated touch, partnering with the China team to source a feather option that could be produced consistently at scale. To keep costs in line, I used one of their existing constructions and enhanced comfort by adding extra padding to the insole, a tonal microfiber lining for softness, and a leather sock to prevent the foot from feeling sweaty.
Throughout development, I collaborated with the buyers and factory teams to refine the pattern and maintain a strong IMU. The original sketch included a knotted tie with beads, but we simplified it to a clean leather bow to stay within cost constraints while keeping the silhouette elevated. This moccasin became part of a broader fringe package that spanned dress and casual categories, offering the Arizona customer a fresh, artisanal update to a silhouette she already loved.
